The book’s main character, Todd, lives in Prentisstown. This is a new world for Todd as the majority
of the citizens succumb to a deadly germ.
Todd’s parents unfortunately lost their lives as well and Todd now has
to live with Ben and Cillian. Todd is
now homeschooled and the government has now put a ban on books.
Todd hears everyone’s thoughts, Noise, and is even able to
hear the thoughts of his dog. Todd
ventures out to pick apples where he experiences a peaceful silence when he
meets up with a girl named Viola. When
“Silence” enters Todd’s thoughts, Benn, Cillian and everyone else can pick up
on what he is thinking and we immediately see a change. Todd’s caretakers convince him to run to
avoid the danger he is now facing. Todd
encounters Aaron whom decides to attack Viola.
Todd and Aaron fight to Aaron’s demise at the hands of Viola. Todd and Viola must now return to
Prentisstown and face President Prentiss.
They quickly realize they have walked into a trap.
