El Deafo

Bell, C. (2014). El Deafo. NY: Abrams.

The general subject of El Deafo centers around its author’s childhood.  Cece Bell grew up being bullied by her peers due to her using a hearing aid.  Cece finds a way to lie to her peers about her hearing aids and she becomes, “El Deafo.”  Cece Bell creates this imaginary character that takes on a heroic role within the story.

Extras found in the book include “A note from the author”, “Acknowledgements”, followed by a short paragraph by Cece Bell with a picture of her as a child wearing her hearing aids. Readers of all ages can enjoy the story, but most intended for middle school students and young adults.  Roller girl by Victoria Jamieson, Sunny side up by Jennifer L. Holm, and Hiden:  A child’s story of the Holocaust by Loic Dauviller would be appropriate books to tackle similar topics.   El Deafo meets the social developmental criteria because Cece obviously struggles to maintain friendships while being afflicted with hearing aids.
