Black, H. (2013). Doll bones. NY: Margaret K.
Elderry Books.
Zack, Poppy, and Alice have been friends for
years. They often play imaginary games
and get lost in their own created stories.
Zach’s father does not agree with Zach playing kid games and stops him
from playing with Poppy and Alice. Zach
is bothered by this decision, but does his best to mask his disappointment.
Poppy claims that she is having dreams about the Great
Queen, a bone china doll, who is bitter and begins to curse those around
her. The trio sets off to return the
Queen to her gravesite and meet up with unsavory characters and experience a
bizarre adventure until the Queen is returned.
Readers aged 10 to 14 can relate to main theme of
friendship and would likely enjoy the comradery and adventure. Doll
Bones meets the mental developmental criteria as a 12 year old Zach still
holds on to his childhood regardless of his father’s disapproval. Suggested reading includes Tithe: A
Modern Faerie Tale by Holly Black, Flora and Ulysses: The Illuminated
Adventures by Kate DiCamillo.
