Harris, R. H., & Emberley, M. (2009).
It's perfectly normal: A book about changing bodies, growing up, sex, and sexual health. Boston,
MA: Candlewick Press
This nonfiction book tackles the
most taboo topic using illustrations and unapologetic frankness. Readers are able to read about sexuality,
puberty, intercourse, and genitals. The
illustrations are informative and detailed and allow the reader to visually understand
that the human body goes through particular changes and how that affects human
sexuality.
The controversial topics include abortion, unexpected (unplanned) pregnancy, masturbation, homosexuality, religious viewpoints and nudity. The author does not shy away from topics that must be addressed in order to allow teens and young adults the liberty to ask questions and seek answers. Havighurst's Developmental Tasks include adapting to their physical bodies and taking on different and appropriate sex roles within the teen community. A similar read would be Teen life: Everything a teenager should know to survive the teen years, by D.M. Mejias.
