Gaby, a girl in pieces

Gabi Hernandez is the main character of the novel.  In the duration of the novel, there are significant life events that affect the way Gabi sees her family, her friends, and herself.  Gabi discovers that her friend Cindy is pregnant due to being raped by her boyfriend.  Gabi also deals with her friend’s sexuality as he has confessed that he is gay.  Gabi realizes in this coming of age story that she can help her friends along the way as she struggles to find her place in the world. 

Gabi must deal with her family’s expectations regarding her place as a girl, particularly from her mother.  Gabi has low self-esteem due to her body image and must now try to venture out to college away from home.   

Reading recommendations include How it went down by Kekla Magoon and Girls like us by Gail Gides.  This book touches upon various topics of interest for young adults experiencing similar issues.  The novel meets the physical, mental, and emotional development criteria based on the characters’ journey in this coming of age novel.
