Garden, N. (1982).  Annie on my mind. NY:  FSG.

The Metropolitan Museum in New York is the setting that sees the blossoming friendship between Liza Winthrop and Annie Kenyan.  Liza and Annie are drawn to each other despite dealing with various obstacles including separation from former lives.  They choose to create make believe lives and have so much more in common.

Nancy Garden tackles the coming of age story between two young girls who find comfort in each other’s friendship.  Their friendship comes with a price when their choices begin to impact two teachers.  Their confusion and inability to come to terms with what they feel shows that teenagers have to find who they truly are emotionally and socially.

Kohlberg’s theory of moral development suggests that the reader go through three separate levels including the preconventional stage where rules may conflict with reality.

Readers might follow up with such books as Jacqueline Woodson’s, The house you pass on the way or The Chocolate War or even The kite runner.
